In this episode, I will tell the FULL story on helicopter N72EX which was flying Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, and 7 other people, including the pilot, when it crashed suddenly into the side of the Santa Monica Mountains just north of Los Angeles, CA on January 26, 2020.  This story will focus on contributing causes of this crash that were almost completely omitted by the media and the NTSB.  There was far more too it than a pilot who simply flew into the clouds.
And if that wasn't bad enough, I will also talk about the terrible decision that law enforcement and fire personnel made when they decided to share gruesome photos of the accident victims at places like television awards events and bars.
While these events were tragic and the results have caused pain to millions of people, there are still lessons to be learned so that these same mistakes are never made again.
If you have a story you'd like me to discuss please let me know in the comments below.

This is the story of Airmethods LifeNet 8-1 out of Hagerstown Regional Airport in Washington County, Maryland.  On January 11, 2022 this medical helicopter crashed into a church in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania while transporting a 2-month old infant.  How in the world did this kid, and the entire crew, survive?  And what caused this accident?  All of this and more in this episode.
Pilots!  I would LOVE to hear your thoughts below about possible causes of this accident.  Lemme know!

This is the story of an Air Evac Lifeteam medical helicopter that was severely damaged as the Fenestron tail ingested a fire extinguisher cover - all while another employee dances for the landing pilot and medical crew.  How were his moves?  More importantly, aside from the obvious damage caused, what other dangers were at risk here?

This story involves a French medical helicopter, specifically SAMU 29 and their encounter with kite surfers and a paraglider while landing to pick up an injured beach goer at the Blancs Sablons beach in Le Conquet (Finistere).  This story involves reconnaissance flights, rotor wash, and more specifically, wake vortex and wake turbulence.  Did you know that wake vortices could be so powerful from a tiny little helicopter like the EC135?  I am curious to know what your training or expectation was in your background.  Lemme know below!

In this episode, I will discuss the story of the fatal medical helicopter crash involving Hospital Wing that took place on March 25, 2010, just outside of Memphis, Tennessee.  I will discuss topics related to work-fatigue, decision making, get-there-itis (yes, that's a real thing :-)), and XM/Sirius weather updates.

In this episode, I will explore the story behind the MediFlight EMS helicopter crash that took place on January 2, 2013.  What went wrong?  Even though this was a clear and beautiful day, how could weather have played a role in this crash?  Was there just one step that was missed?  Also, what role do crash resistant fuel tanks play in crashes like this?
If you fly on an H125/AS350/EC130 do you know what crash resistant fuel tanks are?  Has your operator installed these on your fleet?  Let me know in the comments below!!

In this episode I will tell the story that took place in August of 2022 in Woonsocket, RI, USA.  Two EMTs find a mother who has just delivered a premature baby into her toilet.  The baby is left in the toilet, determined to be dead, transported to the ER in a red bio-hazard bag with the mother, only for ER staff to determine that the baby is still alive.  How could this have happened?  Would routine simulation, practice, and the use of checklists have possibly prevented this from occurring.  All of this and more on this episode...
What do you think?  Have you ever been on a call like this?  Let me know in the comments below.  This is a terribly sad situation but always remember, that because of mistakes like this, the rest of the world can learn.

In this episode, I will explore the story behind the Med-Trans Regional One EMS helicopter crash that took place on July 13, 2004.  What went wrong?  Was there something wrong with the helicopter?  Could this have been prevented?  What in the world is "helicopter shopping" and may have it affected the outcome of this flight?
What do YOU think?  Lemme know in the comments below.  But remember, the purpose of this episode, and this channel, is to learn, and to understand.  Not to bash and insult.
Edit - I misspoke at the beginning and stated that this helicopter flew straight into the side of a mountain.  For clarification, while the Sumter National Forest is technically a part of the Appalachian Mountain range, the area of this crash is more of a  densely forested area with 100-foot-tall pine trees.
Keep in mind that this story is from 2004.  Since then, Med-Trans is under new ownership and new management and many of the shortcomings that are listed as contributing factors in this episode have since been addressed.  Not only have they been addressed, but Med-Trans has somewhat paved the way in the industry by mandating many things that are not even required by the FAA such as autopilots, crash-resistant fuel bladders, participation in an FAA safety management system, and much more.

In this episode, I will tell the story of a flight crew who were called to transfer a patient from a small rural hospital to a larger tertiary care facility in a big metropolitan city.  Something went wrong and the patient ended up dying during transport.  Would it have happened anyway?  Was there a deadly mistake committed by the flight crew?  How might situational awareness have played a role in this story?  All of this and more on this episode.....
What do YOU think?  If you are a paramedic or flight nurse, have you ran a call like this?  Have you made costly mistakes that led to the death of a patient?  If you have a story to share, please email it to me at staff@thedoctormedic.com Be as detailed as possible but please leave names, locations, and agencies out of the story or just change them.  Let's talk about these situations out in the open so we can ALL learn from what others have already done or been through.  Keep it classy ;-)
